University of Redlands Plein Air Event

Alumni House beyond the Orange Grove
A week set aside for painting the University of Redlands campus en plein air, followed by a competition juried by artist, John Budicin, was memorable. The quality of paintings completed by fellow artists was truly remarkable, despite the smoke filled air from distant fires. John awarded 13 prizes, choosing from among approximately 175 well-executed plein air pieces. Jim Wodark took top honors. As we sipped wine, bought raffle tickets for prizes the proceeds of which would go to fire victims, enjoyed appetizers, and watched several sold tags appear on the pieces (one of mine included), we enjoyed this one-time opportunity to participate in the 100 year anniversary of the University of Redlands. An outdoor sale will take place today on the lawn next to the Peppers Art Center. The inclusion of a plein air event was, I thought, a unique, interesting, and wonderful way to mark the celebration of a geographic and academic landmark.
